Two-node architecture targets cost concerns
Red Hat now supports a two-server edge cluster configuration, eliminating the third node required in traditional high-availability setups. The company cites the "prohibitive cost of powering, maintaining, and deploying a third node" as the primary driver for the new architecture.
The configuration addresses edge deployment scenarios where organizations need resilience but face budget constraints or physical space limitations. Edge locations often operate in remote facilities where every piece of hardware represents significant capital and operational expense.
Trade-offs in resilience model
The two-node approach shifts the resilience model from preventing all single points of failure to accepting calculated risk. Organizations gain cost savings and simplified deployment at the expense of the quorum and split-brain protection that three-node clusters provide.
This configuration makes sense for edge use cases where workload interruption during hardware failure is acceptable, or where rapid replacement procedures are in place. The decision reflects growing recognition that not all edge deployments require enterprise data center levels of redundancy.
