Mississippi wins largest-ever state tech investment

On January 8, 2026, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves announced that xAI, Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, will invest more than $20 billion in a data center in Southaven, DeSoto County. The project represents the largest corporate investment in Mississippi history and will create hundreds of permanent jobs.

Mississippi approved xAI for its standard data center incentive program, which provides sales and use tax exemptions for computing equipment. Officials emphasized that the state offered no special treatment beyond existing programs available to all data centers.

The Mississippi announcement reflects a broader shift in AI infrastructure deployment. With traditional tech hubs facing power grid constraints and lengthy permitting processes, companies building hyperscale AI systems are increasingly looking to regions that can deliver energy access and regulatory certainty at speed.
