Microsoft October 2026 end-of-life wave targets Office LTSC 2021, Windows Server 2022, and Publisher
Enterprises running these products face coordinated support expiration requiring migration planning across desktop productivity, server infrastructure, and identity security tools.
Four major products reach end-of-life simultaneously
Microsoft has scheduled October 2026 as the end-of-support date for Office LTSC 2021, Windows Server 2022, Publisher, and Entra ID risk policies. The coordinated timing creates a compressed migration window for organizations running multiple affected products.
Office LTSC 2021 represents the volume licensing edition used by enterprises that prefer perpetual licenses over Microsoft 365 subscriptions. Windows Server 2022 remains widely deployed in on-premises data centers and hybrid cloud environments.
Publisher discontinuation ends desktop publishing era
The retirement of Publisher marks Microsoft's exit from the desktop publishing category after decades. Organizations using Publisher for marketing materials, brochures, and newsletters will need to transition to alternative tools or cloud-based design platforms.
Entra ID risk policies, part of Microsoft's identity security framework, will also cease receiving updates. Administrators will need to migrate to newer conditional access policies or risk-based authentication mechanisms within the Entra ID platform.
Migration planning required across infrastructure layers
The October 2026 deadline affects organizations at multiple infrastructure layers simultaneously. Server administrators must evaluate Windows Server 2025 or cloud migration paths while productivity teams assess Office LTSC 2024 or Microsoft 365 adoption strategies.
Extended security updates may be available for Windows Server 2022 through Microsoft's paid support programs, providing additional time for mission-critical systems. However, Office LTSC 2021 will not receive extended support options beyond the October cutoff.
